Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
